Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change announced India’s milestone achievement in global climate action

India’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) comprises of three quantitative targets namely the reduction of overall emissions intensity of our Gross Domestic Product (GDP), enhancing share of non-fossil fuel-based energy resources in installed electric power capacity and creation of additional carbon sink.

India had achieved a reduction of 37.38% in the emissions intensity of its GDP in 2022 from the  2005 level, against the NDC goal of reducing emissions intensity by 45% by 2030. The share of cumulative installed electric power capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy sources crossed 50% in June 2025, thereby achieving the NDC goal five years ahead of the committed timeline. As of 30th June 2026, non-fossil fuel-based energy resources accounted for 54.18% of the country’s total installed electric power capacity. India has created an additional carbon sink of 2.44 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent during 2005 to 2022, against the NDC goal of creating an additional carbon sink of 2.5–3.0 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent by 2030 through additional forest and tree cover

Ministry of Science & Technology rolled out environmental outcomes of Bio E3 policy

The Department of Biotechnology under the Ministry of Science and Technology, under the aegis of BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment) policy, has identified measurable targets in terms of scales, yield and Technology Readiness Level for technology development and scale up thereof for biomanufacturing of the bio-based alternatives to replace fossil-based inputs. Department of Biotechnology (DBT) also supported the projects to develop the biomanufacturing solutions targeted to reduce the import dependency of fossil-based inputs. The digital portal ‘Sujivika’ launched by the DBT provides biotech import data. The portal facilitates identification of indigenous bio-based products based on import data for Atmanirbhar Bharat, targeting to promote domestic manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported chemicals and materials including the fossil-derived chemicals, materials and fuels.

Ministry of Jal Shakti reported over 5.63 lakh villages covered with liquid waste management arrangements under SBM(G) Phase II

Sanitation is a State subject. Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) [SBM(G)] Phase II is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme implemented by States/UTs in respective jurisdictions. SBM(G) Phase II was launched with effect from 1st April 2020, with the focus on ODF sustainability with Solid & Liquid Waste Management (SLWM) and visual cleanliness in villages i.e. to convert villages from ODF to ODF Plus (Model). Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) monitors the status of Grey Water Management (GWM) under SBM(G) Phase-II as reported by States/UTs on the SBM(G) Integrated Management Information System (IMIS).

NITI Aayog released report on “Key Sectors to Position India as a Global Manufacturing Hub”

NITI Aayog has released the report titled “Key Sectors to Position India as a Global Manufacturing Hub”, which through a structured and data-driven framework identifies major sectors that can fuel India’s ambition to become global manufacturing powerhouse. This report has extensively analyzed four sectors viz. Chemicals, Telecom & Networking Equipments, Textiles and Solar Photo Voltaic manufacturing.

The assessment focuses on understanding India’s manufacturing landscape in relation to global trends, sectoral growth opportunities and global benchmarks. It also examines the factors that influence manufacturing competitiveness, including market potential, infrastructure readiness, policy support, raw material availability, technology readiness, employment potential and India’s current position in the value chain.

The project seeks to identify sectors where India has significant growth potential and where targeted interventions can strengthen domestic capabilities, enhance competitiveness and value addition, and accelerate export-oriented manufacturing growth. The study also draws on the experience of leading manufacturing countries to develop sector-specific recommendations for addressing key challenges and promoting growth in the identified sectors.

Ministry of Earth Sciences provide Indigenious Warning Systems for various Meteorological Events

National Centre for Seismology (NCS) is actively involved in the monitoring of earthquakes occurring across the country on a 24×7 basis through its National Seismological Network (NSN), comprising 174 seismological observatories as on date spread throughout the country.

The alerting method is generally based on detection of the initial non-damaging primary waves (P-waves) at sensors placed in the source region, enabling issuance of an alert on occurrence of a damaging earthquake, providing a few seconds lead time ahead of arrival of stronger ground shaking at targeted sites depending upon distance from the earthquake source. The fund allocated for NCS are being used to develop an EEW system in the pilot phase.

Cloudbursts are highly localized, short-duration extreme rainfall events influenced by complex interactions of atmospheric conditions and local topography, particularly in mountainous regions such as the Himalayas. Owing to their localized nature and limited observational data, no conclusive study has been conducted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences to establish the reasons behind any perceived increase in cloudburst incidents in Himachal Pradesh. However, IMD monitors and provides impact-based early warning services for various meteorological disaster events at different temporal and spatial scales to support disaster risk reduction management. The forecasts and warnings are shared through multiple communication channels for use by disaster management authorities, state governments, district administrations, and other stakeholders, including the Ministry of Home Affairs, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), State Disaster Management Authorities (SDMAs), Deputy Commissioners/District Magistrates, Central Government Departments and Ministries and the media to support preparedness and response measures.
