FIFA World Cup burning: Messi, Ronaldo and Mbappe to play in 30 to 35°C heat

The actual heat stress on players during matches may be higher than currently measured

On early morning July 4 Indian time, when Messi takes the field against Cape Verde at his US home city Miami ground, he may be more bothered about countering the searing heat rather than the island country’s defensive process. Ditto for Mbappe, the day after.

Already a mid-half hydration break, a measure to counter players’ thirst and fatigue playing in high heat conditions, has been put into place, and more such breaks may be added if the situation gets heated, literally.

A new analysis from Climate Central, released on Friday and accessed by The Plurals, says that “a major heat dome is settling over the East Coast of North America ahead of the Fourth of July weekend—right on top of many of the stadiums hosting World Cup matches.”

The study finds that this heatwave is, at its peak, at least five times more likely due to climate change, raising fresh questions about the sport’s vulnerability to rising temperatures and the risks posed to both players and fans.

Heat luck hitting teams

As teams enter the knockout stages, luck of the draw in venue allocation—particularly the presence or absence of air conditioning in stadiums—is set to create an uneven physical burden on players, potentially influencing performance in subsequent rounds, the report claims.

With heat warnings stretching across the eastern United States and Canada, teams playing at New York’s MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Miami, Philadelphia, and Toronto—none of which have air conditioning—face punishing conditions that risk leaving those advancing from these fixtures at a relative disadvantage compared to teams competing in the air-conditioned stadiums of Houston, Dallas, and Atlanta.

The report lists the matches at highest risk during the ongoing week: Portugal vs. Croatia on July 2 evening in Toronto, Argentina vs. Cape Verde on July 3 evening in Miami, and Paraguay vs. France on July 4 late afternoon in Philadelphia.

While the Portugal match had about 92.8°F (33.8°C), a whopping departure of 15.6°F (8.7°C) from normal, and humid heat made at least seven times more likely due to climate change, the Argentina match runs a forecast of high heat as well, 86.6°F (30.3°C) with humid heat made at least ten times more likely due to climate change. The France match is expected to be played in a high-heat ambience with the temperature projected to be 96.3°F (35.7°C), a departure of 9.6°F (5.3°C) from normal.

With El Nino hitting hard with rising heat, the world is burning this summer. The Football World Cup, being held between June 12 and July 19, was earlier predicted to be impacted by the heat affecting both the footballers’ health and performance.
